What is a VoIP Number?
A VoIP number is connected to a service that carries voice or messaging traffic primarily over Internet Protocol. Interconnected VoIP services can also send calls to and receive calls from the public telephone network.
A VoIP number may look like an ordinary local or mobile number. Its visible country or area code does not reveal how the service is routed.
How does it work?
The provider assigns a telephone number and maps it to an online account, application or IP-compatible endpoint. Calls and supported messages are converted into data and delivered through an internet connection.
Some providers enable both voice and SMS, while others support only one. A number that can receive calls is not automatically able to receive verification texts.
VoIP vs. Non-VoIP vs. OTP Number
| Term | What it describes | Typical strength | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| VoIP number | Internet-delivered telephone service | Remote access, fast provisioning and lower cost | SMS and platform acceptance vary |
| Non-VoIP number | A carrier, SIM-backed or traditional number | Often used for long-term SMS reception | It still cannot guarantee verification |
| OTP number | A number used to receive one-time codes | Focused on verification workflows | It may be VoIP or Non-VoIP |
Use cases and limitations
VoIP numbers are commonly used for customer support, remote teams, regional business presence, permitted application testing and SMS verification when the provider and destination platform support it.
They are not inherently anonymous or universally disposable. Providers may retain records, and online services may restrict particular number ranges. Current NIST guidance has removed its previous blanket prohibition on VoIP for out-of-band authentication, but telephone-network verification remains a restricted method with risks such as number reassignment, SIM changes and interception.
